The Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a blood borne infection and a leading cause of end-stage liver disease. The World Health Organization estimates that about 58 million people are living with chronic HCV, leading to 290,000 deaths annually due to HCV-related liver illness. Here in Canada, HCV affects a quarter of a million people. Of this quarter million, over 40% are unaware of their infection.
It is estimated that over 60,000 people have been exposed to hepatitis C virus (HCV) in BC, with approximately 2,000 new cases identified in the province each year. Many people living with a chronic hepatitis C infection are unaware of their status until symptoms appear.

A new research paper published by the BC-CfE laboratory’s scientists will help healthcare providers improve treatments for people living with the hepatitis C virus (HCV). The study, led by Dr. Hope Lapointe, describes a new test that physicians can use to help “personalize” their patients’ HCV treatment.

The BC-CfE’s Nance Cunningham, an Experimental Medicine PhD student working in the EMBARC team (Epidemiological, Mathematical and Biostatistical analysis and Research Collaboration in HIV/AIDS) has been chosen as a UBC Public Scholar.The Public Scholars Initiative (PSI)supports creative, action-oriented research designed to address complex challenges and have meaningful public impact as part of a PhD thesis. The award will support Cunningham’s research partnerships with people affected by hepatitis C, and patient advocacy activists.
