December 1st is World AIDS Day. At the Canadian Association for HIV
Research (CAHR) we would like to take this time to recognize the
accomplishments of Canadian researchers from across all disciplines of
HIV research. Their discoveries have contributed greatly to the fight
against HIV and AIDS both in Canada and globally.

We have had a busy year at CAHR. This year’s conference
in St. John’s, Newfoundland was a great success and featured many of
the best HIV researchers from Canada and beyond. In addition, CAHR
hosted workshops
in Quebec City, Banff, St. John’s, Vancouver and Edmonton and we will
be hosting many more in 2015. These workshops help to build the research
skills of both new and experienced investigators with a focus on
community engagement and enhancing research relevance.

In recent months, CAHR has partnered with the CIHR HIV/AIDS Research
Initiative, CANFAR, CTN and the Canadian HIV Vaccine Initiative in the
development of a series of profiles of Canadian HIV researchers that highlight the excellent research that is taking place from coast to coast thanks to investments from Canadian funders.

CAHR is looking forward to the year to come. Our strategic planning process was completed in 2014 and is now guiding CAHR’s work for the next five years. We will be hosting the 2015 annual CAHR Conference in Toronto from April 30 to May 3.
This year’s theme “Combining Strengths in the Struggle Against HIV”
will emphasize the interdisciplinary nature of HIV research and the
importance of combined approaches to treatment and prevention. In
addition, we will be announcing the most recent recipients of CAHR’s
Master’s and Doctoral Student Awards for 2015 at the conference.

This World AIDS Day 2014, we look back at the remarkable advances
that have been made possible thanks to HIV/AIDS research. CAHR is proud
to be part of the community of researchers and community groups working
tirelessly in the global fight against HIV. We anticipate new
discoveries, advances and milestones in the coming year!
