TORONTO – The founding president of the Canadian Institutes for Health Research and a global leader in HIV research are among the new inductees to the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame.
Former CIHR president Dr. Alan Bernstein and University of British Columbia’s Dr. Julio Montaner are among six new members welcomed to the body this year.
Other inductees include Dr. Judith Hall of Vancouver, whose research focuses on the genetic factors that influence children’s growth, and Dr. Bernard Langer, a global pioneer in liver and pancreatic surgery based in Toronto.
This year’s inductees include Dr. Duncan Sinclair of Kingston, Ont., an internationally recognized leader in health reform.
The group is rounded out by the late Dr. John McCrae of Guelph, Ont., the First World War field doctor who wrote “In Flanders Fields.”
The moving ode to the fallen soldiers of the “war to end all wars” is a staple of Remembrance Day celebrations and has led to the poppy becoming the symbol of commemoration.
“This year’s inductees represent Canada’s most accomplished medical innovators whose contributions on the national and international stages have been transformative to patient care, health systems, education and research,” Dr. Brian Post, dean of health sciences at the University of Manitoba, and Dr. Arnold Naimark, who was inducted into the medical hall of fame in 2013, said of the new class.
