Panama continues the fight against HIV

Yesterday was a day of historic for Panama to become the first country in Central America to bring Treatment as Prevention for HIV, which adopts strategies as a national policy on HIV/AIDS.

Research recently published by the British Columbia Centre for Excellence (BC-CfE), found that the expansion of the treatment against HIV in British Columbia has resulted in decreases in morbidity, mortality and new HIV cases.

The adoption of this strategy is the signing of an agreement between the British Columbia Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS and the Ministry of health, on behalf of the Republic of Panama.

According to the Minister of health, Javier Díaz, 35 million people suffering from HIV in the world.

Panamá continúa la lucha contra el VIH

Ayer fue un día histórico para Panamá al convertirse en el primer país de CentroamŽrica en traer el tratamiento para la prevención del VIH, con lo que adopta estrategias como política nacional contra el VIH-sida.

En investigación recientemente publicada por el Centro de Excelencia de Columbia Británica (CECB), se encontró que la expansión del tratamiento contra el VIH en la Columbia Británica ha dado lugar a disminuciones en la morbilidad, mortalidad y los nuevos casos de VIH.

Dentro de la adopción de esta estrategia está la firma de un acuerdo entre el Centro de Excelencia de VIH-sida de la Columbia Británica y el Ministerio de Salud, en representación de la República de Panamá.

Según el ministro de Salud, Javier Díaz, 35 millones de personas padecen VIH en el mundo.

During the Canada Post strike announced September 25, 2025, the following measures will be undertaken to minimize service disruption to BC-CfE clients and providers.

  • The BC-CfE Laboratory has transitioned to private courier for delivery of outgoing reports and documents. Results required urgently can be faxed upon request. (Lab Contact Information: Phone 604-806-8775; FAX 604-806-9463)
  • The BC-CfE Drug Treatment Program (DTP) will fax outgoing forms and documents to the provider’s office. (DTP Contact Information: Phone 604-806-8515; FAX 604-806-9044)
  • St. Paul’s Hospital Ambulatory Pharmacy has transitioned to private courier for delivery of medications. We recommend requesting medication at least 2 weeks in advance in case of delivery delays, particularly to rural/remote parts of BC. (Contact Information: Phone 1-800-547-3622; FAX 604-806-8675)

During the Canada Post strike, we recommend that documents be faxed or couriered to our sites, versus utilization of regular mail service

The BC-CfE Laboratory is streamlining reporting processes for certain tests in order to simplify distribution and record-keeping, and to ensure completeness of results. Beginning September 2, 2025, results for the ‘Resistance Analysis of HIV-1 Protease and Reverse Transcriptase’ (Protease-RT) and ‘HIV-1 Integrase Resistance Genotype’ tests will be combined into a single ‘HIV-1 Resistance Genotype Report’.
