Expanding Understandings of Violence Against Women

Dr. Andrew Gibbs
Senior Specialist Scientist, Gender and Health Research Unit, South African Medical Research Council

Dr. Andrew Gibbs is a senior specialist scientist with the Gender and Health Research Unit, at the South African Medical Research Council, where he works on the global DfID funded programme, What Works to Prevent Violence Against Women and Girls? He is the PI of the Stepping Stones and Creating Futures intervention trial in Durban, South Africa, and co-investigator on an evaluation of a violence prevention programme in Afghanistan. He also supports a number of other projects including in Bangladesh, and the evaluation of DREAMS in South Africa. He has worked on gender and health issues in South Africa for the past 10 years, and is interested in understanding why interventions succeed or fail, men and masculinities, and how economics shapes violence against women. His talk will focus on a number of new analyses that seek to expand our current understandings of violence against women, and the health impacts this has, drawing on data from across the globe.

This is a free lecture and is open to the public. The lectures are geared towards researchers, clinicians, students and hospital staff.
