In recognition of his community-engaged teaching and research activities, Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) professor Robert Hogg has been named the recipient of the 2019 Warren Gill Award for Community Impact.
Hogg has dedicated his research career to working with BC clinicians, community organizations and people living with HIV to find ways to overcome barriers to accessing treatment and to initiate novel, population level approaches to prevent HIV. His expertise in population health has not only helped to advance treatment approaches locally, but also across cultures and communities abroad.
An internationally renowned scientific leader, educator and mentor to many of Canada’s experts in HIV, Hogg joined the Faculty of Health Sciences in 2006, helping to establish the SFU Interdisciplinary Research Centre for HIV (SIRCH). In addition to currently serving as FHS’s Associate Dean, Research, he is also a Senior Research Fellow at the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS.
Hogg’s impact on communities and the public at large throughout his career has been widely recognized. He has been honoured with a Canadian University Faculty Association Career Achievement Award, and is a Canadian Academy of Health Sciences Fellow and a member of the Order of Canada. Most recently, he was named a Distinguished SFU Professor, which not only highlights his outstanding academic achievements, but also his impact through public engagement and student and faculty mentorship.
Established in 2017, the Warren Gill Award for Community Impact is provided to a SFU faculty or staff member that has demonstrated a significant positive impact in the social, economic, environmental, and/or cultural fabric of one or more of the communities SFU serves.
Working in collaboration with communities to achieve positive social change, Hogg’s extraordinarily community-oriented work truly exemplifies SFU’s mission in “engaging students, research and communities.”
