The BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS (BC-CfE) is pleased to congratulate BC-CfE Laboratory Director Dr. Zabrina Brumme on her appointment as a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (CAHS).
In an announcement Tuesday, CAHS revealed the 47 new Fellows who represent the pinnacle of their respective fields, including Dr. Brumme for her extensive work in HIV. Considered one of the highest honours for individuals in the Canadian health sciences community, election to the CAHS reflects an outstanding dedication and excellence in one’s field, with a commitment to further enriching the broader health sciences.
In her joint roles as BC-CfE Laboratory Director and Professor with Simon Fraser University’s Faculty of Health Sciences, Dr. Brumme leads a team of over 35 researchers who integrate molecular biology, epidemiology & computational approaches to study HIV genetic diversity and evolution. This work is informing HIV cure strategies and deepening our understanding of the dynamics that have helped HIV elude full control.
She also oversees the BC-CfE Laboratory Program responsible for a wide range of clinical services for nearly all provinces and territories in Canada. From personal medicine tests helping physicians choose the optimal therapy for their client, to routine drug resistance testing, and therapeutic drug level monitoring; Dr. Brumme’s leadership is vital to the successful delivery of HIV care for tens of thousands of patients across Canada.
Dr. Brumme has a brilliant analytical mind and a determination to tackle some of the deeper mysteries of HIV evolution, broadening our collective knowledge of the virus in the hopes of one day achieving a cure for HIV.
Her appointment to the CAHS shines a well-deserved spotlight on the hard work and innovation that defines Dr. Brumme’s leadership here at the BC-CfE, and we are excited to see the continued evolution of this work.Dr. Julio Montaner, BC-CfE Executive Director & Physician-in-Chief
With an investiture ceremony taking place in the Fall, Dr. Brumme will join Drs. Julio Montaner and Robert Hogg as the third CAHS Fellow from the BC-CfE, and continue the legacy of advancing our knowledge of HIV in the hopes of one day ending the epidemic globally.
Please join us in congratulating Dr. Brumme on this tremendous honour!
