The BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS (BC-CfE) Committee for Drug Evaluation and Therapy (CDET) has completed the evaluation of available data regarding the use of the four COVID-19 vaccines currently approved in Canada for persons living with HIV (PLWH). Statement by Dr. Julio Montaner: Recent findings add to already strong case for Treatment as Prevention¨ as means to end AIDS
The latest findings from a major international study support the already strong case that consistent and sustained HIV antiretroviral treatment prevents new HIV infections. In findings released in The Lancet, the PARTNER study found no cases of HIV transmission through condomless sex among gay couples in which one partner was living with HIV on treatment and the other was HIV-negative. These results follow previous PARTNER study findings showing no cases of HIV transmission in more than 58,000 instances of condomless sex among serodiscordant homosexual and heterosexual couples.
New HIV screening opportunities identified, according to BC-CfE study
A study from the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS (BC-CfE) uncovered new opportunities in the health care system to diagnose individuals living with HIV. In 2017, nearly a quarter of those diagnosed with HIV in BC had a CD4 count that was low, a major indicator of a weakened immune system and advanced HIV disease.

BC-CfE applauds advance towards an HIV cure
The BC-CfE is optimistic about the encouraging announcement that a second person has been cleared of HIV. As in the first case, this was achieved through a bone-marrow transplant from a donor harbouring a rare mutation in the human CCR5 gene. The CCR5 is necessary for HIV to enter cells in the human body as it acts as a receptor.
BC-CfE research shows no relationship between antiretrovirals and osteoporosis-related fractures
Research from the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS (BC-CfE) has found that a higher proportion of individuals living with HIV have experienced osteoporosis-related factures (ORF) compared to HIV-negative individuals (6.08% versus 5.45%).
