Therapeutic Guidelines

The Therapeutic Guidelines Committee plays a key role in the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS’s (BC-CfE's) ongoing commitment to providing the most current information and research regarding the treatment of HIV/AIDS. The Committee generates the BC HIV/AIDS Therapeutic Guidelines, in order to assist physicians throughout the province to become more actively involved in all aspects of prescribing and monitoring antiretroviral drug regimens for their patients.

The Therapeutic Guidelines reflect a consensus of the BC-CfE’s Therapeutic Guidelines Committee, which is made up of physicians, pharmacists, virologists, health service researchers, community members and economists. This information represents the Committee’s interpretation of current best practices in the treatment of HIV/AIDS and related conditions, based on the current state of knowledge. However, because the science of HIV evolves rapidly, the availability of new agents and new clinical data may change therapeutic options and preferences. Accordingly, it is intended these Guidelines will form the basis for HIV treatment strategies, and the results of those strategies are constantly monitored through assessment of clinical and virological outcomes for treated patients. These outcome studies are subsequently used as part of the quarterly reviews of the Guidelines. Revisions of the Guidelines are mailed to Antiretroviral prescribing physicians throughout the province.

These Therapeutic Guidelines are intended for use by physicians and other health care providers to assist in clinical decision-making. They are not designed or intended for the general public and should not be considered, or used as a substitute for, medical advice. Individuals are advised to always seek the advice of a physician or other qualified health care provider for specific information on personal health matters.

The Therapeutic Guidelines are based on scientific evidence current as of the date issued and are subject to change. Any person consulting or applying the Therapeutic Guidelines is expected to use independent medical judgment and expertise in the context of individual clinical circumstances. The information is provided “as is” and the BC-CfE and Providence Health Care (“PHC”) make no representations or warranties of any kind, either expressed or implied, as to the accuracy of the information or the fitness of the information for any particular use and specifically disclaim any responsibility for their application or use in any way. To the fullest extent possible under applicable law, the BC-CfE and PHC disclaim and will not be bound by any express, implied or statutory representation or warranty (including without limitation representations or warranties of title or non-infringement).
