HIV-positive man sentenced to 11 years in jail

An HIV positive man from New Westminster, B.C., has been sentenced to
11 years in prison for failing to tell his sexual partners of his
health status.

Bongani Nyoni was charged
with three counts of aggravated sexual assault in 2010. A B.C. Supreme
Court jury convicted him on all three counts in February, 2014.

Two of the women tested positive for HIV following the incidents,
which date back to May, 2006. Crown counsel argued that the women
couldn’t have given their consent, because they didn’t know he was HIV
positive.

Sgt. Diana McDaniel with the New Westminster Police Department said they first heard of the allegations in 2009.

The BC-CfE Laboratory is streamlining reporting processes for certain tests in order to simplify distribution and record-keeping, and to ensure completeness of results. Beginning September 2, 2025, results for the ‘Resistance Analysis of HIV-1 Protease and Reverse Transcriptase’ (Protease-RT) and ‘HIV-1 Integrase Resistance Genotype’ tests will be combined into a single ‘HIV-1 Resistance Genotype Report’.
