Canadian, Chinese HIV/AIDS control agencies renew partnership: expert

VANCOUVER, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) — Canada’s British Columbia (B.C.) Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS has renewed a memorandum of understanding with China’s AIDS control and prevention agency, according to the head of the center.

The paper was signed between the B.C. center and the National Center for AIDS/STD Control and Prevention, Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Dr. Julio Montaner, director of the B.C. center, told Xinhua.

It launches a new three-year HIV Treatment as Prevention Fellowship that will bring three Chinese scientists to Vancouver to work with researchers and clinicians at the renowned center at St. Paul’s Hospital here, according to him.

He said his ideal is to increase HIV/AIDS detection to 90 percent globally, expand treatment to 90 percent of those patients and reduce 90 percent of cases to undetectable levels by 2020.

However, HIV infection rates are climbing in parts of the world and overall investment in HIV research and treatments has flat-lined over the last decade, Montaner said.
