World Hepatitis Day Art Contest

The BC Centre for Excellence (BC-CfE) is excited to launch an art contest to mark World Hepatitis Day on July 28th 2017. With this contest we hope to raise awareness about hepatitis C virus (HCV).

In Canada, it is estimated that 300,000 people are living with HCV with approximately 80,000 of those living in BC. HCV is passed on when the blood from someone who has HCV gets into the bloodstream of another person. This can happen with high risk sexual practices; sharing injection equipment or getting a tattoo or piercing with unsterilized equipment.

New treatments (Direct Acting Antiviral [DAA]) are available with high cure rates (95%) in as little as 8-12 weeks and are all tablets with minimal side effects. They replace the previous HCV drugs that had many side effects.

There are many health benefits to getting treatment and curing HCV. Even people who don’t have noticeable symptoms can benefit from treatment. It can help to prevent further liver damage, liver cancer, and liver failure.

Artwork

Artwork should raise awareness about HCV. They will be judged on their ability to be used widely. Various sizes of artwork will be accepted up to 40 X40.

The theme for World Hepatitis Day 2017 is:

“Know your Status, Get tested – Learn your options”

The artwork will be judged on information given in the following three categories:

  • HCV re-infection
  • New treatments exist, and they are easy to administer!
  • Dispelling the myths about HCV
