Passions sets $1-million goal to mark decade of helping those with HIV/AIDS

Ten years ago, Nathan Fong organized a fundraiser to help people living with HIV/AIDS. That cooking class for 100, with nine chefs, raised $7,000.

On Sunday, the annual event, Passions, continues at the Dr. Peter Centre on Comox Street.

Passions has raised $900,000 since its launch and, as always, it will feature great food, wine and enviable raffle and auction items.

The food will be a joint effort by chefs from 24 restaurants, including top-notchers like Chambar, Tojo’s, Market by Jean-Georges, and West.

Global TV’s Sophie Lui and colourful radio personality Fred Lee will be MCs for the evening; Chuck Curry, the executive chef for White Spot (the guy you see in the White Spot ads), will be playing sax with his quartet, Sax Noir.

“Who would have imagined 10 years would pass by so quickly,” says Fong, founder and chair of the event. “None of this would be possible without the amazing support from our local chefs, restaurants, volunteers and my committee team. Let’s paint the town red this year and reach $1,000,000. I’m certainly hoping and it would be cool. We’re pretty close.”

The money raised will benefit the Dr. Peter AIDS Foundation, which provides HIV treatment and other supports for people impacted by HIV/AIDS.
