O mdico e pesquisador argentino radicado no Canadá, Julio Montaner – criador da estratgia “Tratamento como Prevenção” (“Treatment as key to Prevention”/TasP) – fará a conferência de abertura do 10º Congresso de HIV/Aids e do 3° Congresso de Hepatites Virais “Novos Horizontes, Novas Respostas”, do Ministrio da Saúde: “Por que pensar no fim da epidemia em 2030”. Realizados em João Pessoa, os congressos acontecerão simultaneamente de 17 a 20 de novembro e pretendem colocar em discussão os principais tópicos que hoje permeiam os temas da aids e das hepatites virais.
A escolha não poderia ser mais acertada: Ãcone internacional da luta contra o HIV/aids e atual diretor do Centro de Excelência em HIV/Aids da Columbia Britânica (British Columbia Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS), no Canadá, Montaner foi pioneiro no uso de medicamentos antirretrovirais como forma de tratar e prevenir milhões de infecções por HIV em todo o mundo – e traduz a ousadia e a excelência que há 30 anos pautam o Brasil em seus esforços para dar fim à epidemia de HIV/aids. Em grandes linhas, o conceito que Montaner introduziu na Columbia Britânica – e que foi na sequência adotado por vários paÃses, inclusive o Brasil – se refere ao diagnóstico precoce do HIV e ao tratamento com antirretrovirais capazes de suprimir o vÃrus a ponto de este se tornar indetectável e diminuir de forma drástica o risco de transmissão do HIV. A fórmula tem se demonstrado extremamente acertada: de uma morte quase garantida, alguns anos atrás, a infecção por HIV passou hoje a representar uma doença manejável, que – mediante o tratamento correto – permite ao portador a possibilidade de levar uma vida normal.

In broad lines, the concept that Montaner introduced in British Columbia – and that it was following adopted by several countries, including Brazil – refers to the early diagnosis of HIV and treatment with anti-retroviral drugs able to suppress the virus to this point become undetectable and decrease dramatically the risk of HIV transmission. The formula has been shown to be extremely wise move: a death almost guaranteed, some years ago, HIV infection today represent a manageable disease, which – with the right treatment-allows the wearer the ability to lead a normal life.
