Michel Sidibé to remain head of UNAIDS for five more years

The United Nations announced on Friday the five-year renewal of Michel Sidibé as head of their program of fight against HIV/AIDS.

Mr. Sidibé has been the Executive Director of UNAIDS, the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS, and Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations since January 1, 2009.

Dr. Julio Montaner of the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS applauded the news of Mr. Sidibé’s renewed term.

“Michel’s leadership and courage have helped improve the lives of millions of people living with HIV and AIDS,” said Dr. Montaner.”Under his guidance, UNAIDS has been a leader in the global fight against this disease. I look forward to continuing my work with him to achieve an HIV and AIDS-free generation in our lifetime.”

Mr. Sidibé’s new mandate begins January 1, 2014 and will be completed in December 2018.

The BC-CfE Laboratory is streamlining reporting processes for certain tests in order to simplify distribution and record-keeping, and to ensure completeness of results. Beginning September 2, 2025, results for the ‘Resistance Analysis of HIV-1 Protease and Reverse Transcriptase’ (Protease-RT) and ‘HIV-1 Integrase Resistance Genotype’ tests will be combined into a single ‘HIV-1 Resistance Genotype Report’.
