Michel Sidibé to remain head of UNAIDS for five more years

The United Nations announced on Friday the five-year renewal of Michel Sidibé as head of their program of fight against HIV/AIDS.

Mr. Sidibé has been the Executive Director of UNAIDS, the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS, and Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations since January 1, 2009.

Dr. Julio Montaner of the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS applauded the news of Mr. SidibĂ©’s renewed term.

“Michel’s leadership and courage have helped improve the lives of millions of people living with HIV and AIDS,” said Dr. Montaner.”Under his guidance, UNAIDS has been a leader in the global fight against this disease. I look forward to continuing my work with him to achieve an HIV and AIDS-free generation in our lifetime.”

Mr. SidibĂ©’s new mandate begins January 1, 2014 and will be completed in December 2018.
