On Friday, March 4th, 2011, the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS Forefront Lecture Series will present a joint lecture by Dr. Elizabeth Phillips and Dr. Simon Mallal. Dr. Phillips’s presentation is titled “Immunogenetics and immunopathology of drug hypersensitivity”; Dr. Mallal’s presentation is titled “Co-evolution of HLA and viruses”.

Elizabeth Phillips, MD, is a Professor of Pharmacology at Murdoch University’s Centre for Clinical Pharmacology and Infectious Diseases (Perth, Australia). Her research focuses on genetic determinants of efficacy and toxicity of HIV antiretroviral treatment as well as the pharmacokinetics of antiretroviral drugs in distinctive treatment populations.

Simon Mallal, MB, BS, is Director of the Institute for Immunology and Infectious Diseases at Murdoch University and a Clinical Immunologist and Immunopathologist at Royal Perth Hospital. His research examines genetic influences on clinical outcomes in HIV and other diseases. More recently he has focused on viral adaptation to HLA-restricted immune responses and the implications of this for HIV vaccine immunogen design.

The talk will be at noon in the New Lecture Theatre at St. Paul’s Hospital.

A light lunch and refreshments will be served.
