Vancouver, B.C (July 19, 2015) – Some of Vancouver’s most recognizable landmarks are lighting up red for IAS 2015. The special lighting of BC Place, Science World at Telus World of Science, Vancouver’s Olympic Cauldron, and City Hall will honour the HIV/AIDS victims who have succumbed to the disease. On July 19, the Sails of Light at Canada Place will also shine red to welcome all those working together in the fight to stop HIV/AIDS.

Sensational headlines entice readers but too often tell an incomplete story that only serves to perpetuate negative stereotypes. This is frequently the case when people living with HIV navigate the criminal justice system in HIV non-disclosure cases only to see their faces splashed across media channels, adding to the public fear and stigma associated with HIV/AIDS. Most prosecutions are against men, but for women living with HIV, the very justice system that was set up to protect women by criminalizing HIV non-disclosure is further victimizing them.

One year ago today, B.C. Premier Christy Clark, B.C. Health Minister Terry Lake, BC-CfE Director Julio Montaner, and UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé marked a milestone in British Columbia’s fight against HIV and AIDS: the repurposing of a St. Paul’s Hospital 10C Ward that had served those dying from AIDS, starting in 1997 at the peak of the epidemic in Vancouver.

In Canada, We Have the Strategy and the Tools to End AIDS

World Health Day marks a time to reflect on the many public health challenges to be addressed around the globe, such as the 35 million people living with HIV and AIDS. It’s also a call to address such issues closer to home. In Canada, we can lead the way forward towards ending the HIV/AIDS epidemic, but a federal level commitment is sorely lacking.

The BC-CfE Laboratory is streamlining reporting processes for certain tests in order to simplify distribution and record-keeping, and to ensure completeness of results. Beginning September 2, 2025, results for the ‘Resistance Analysis of HIV-1 Protease and Reverse Transcriptase’ (Protease-RT) and ‘HIV-1 Integrase Resistance Genotype’ tests will be combined into a single ‘HIV-1 Resistance Genotype Report’.
