ORGANIZATION: The BC-CfE is a world-renowned HIV/AIDS Centre with an innovative, low-barrier approach to healthcare delivery in clinical practice and an integrated group of research concentrations in Laboratory Sciences, Clinical Trials, Population Health and Epidemiology, Health Economics and Professional Education Programs. A multidisciplinary team of clinicians including Physicians, Nurses, Social Workers and Peers and researchers including Health Economists, Epidemiologists, Clinical Researchers, Statisticians, Programmers, and Data Analysts work collaboratively to improve the health of British Columbians with HIV and communities facing socio-economic barriers in accessing healthcare through the development, ongoing monitoring and dissemination of comprehensive research and treatment programs for HIV and related diseases.

JOB:

The Epidemiologist will support research activities related to different BC-CfE’s administrative databases and to the Canadian Community Health Survey of Statistics Canada. The Epidemiologist will also lead epidemiologic studies in response to a broad range of HIV/AIDSrelated topics. The position works closely with the Senior Methodologist to perform clinical and population-level data analysis and interpretation and knowledge translation to inform local, provincial and public health initiatives.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  • Oversee data sharing, ethics, and privacy agreements, facilitate updated data linkages, and ensure consistent and proper use of the datasets.  
  • Support research staff (e.g., Research Assistants, Trainees, Students) by reviewing study protocols and resultant abstracts/manuscripts that describe outputs from administrative data analyses.  
  • Serve as a liaison between research staff and the teams of data analysts and statisticians.
  • Develop and lead research projects for first-author publication, when time and interest permit.  
  • Coordinate the preparation and submission of grant applications (e.g. CIHR, NIH, etc).
  • Coordinate meetings among the research team, and other staff.
  • Coordinate knowledge translation activities, including management of the study website and preparation of study status and other management reports.
  • Contribute to training and mentoring of research staff and to creation of educational materials.
  • Assist with various administrative tasks associated with the day-to-day operations of research studies and projects and perform other duties as required.
  • Conform to the highest standards of responsible conduct in research and comply with all the BC-CfE’s policies and procedures.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:  

  • Master’s degree in epidemiology, population/public health (with a focus on quantitative methods), or health sciences and a minimum of 2 years of recent related professional experience. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
  • Experience organizing and coordinating research projects and/or grant based programs.
  • Demonstrated experience with scientific writing for manuscripts and grants.
  • As demonstrated by education and/or publications, an understanding of key concepts of epidemiology (e.g., study design, sampling, bias) and data analysis (e.g., regression modeling and adjustment for confounding).
  • Proven understanding of and appreciation for research ethics, confidentiality, and privacy regulations.  
  • Attention to detail and enthusiasm for working collaboratively to solve complex problems.  
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, including ability to communicate clearly and effectively in-person and by telephone; tact, diplomacy, and flexibility in dealing with community members, research staff and study investigators.
  • An understanding of and sensitivity to diversity issues, with a commitment to social inclusion.

Assets:

  • Experience with administrative health data, particularly in British Columbia or Canada. Affinity with and basic understanding of clinical and socio-structural aspects of HIV .  
  • Experience preparing documents, reports, and communication materials for mass distribution.
  • Experience with coding and interpreting statistical analyses (e.g., regression models) in preferred software (e.g., SAS, STATA, R).
  • Ability to identify and analyze trends and changes in disease incidence and prevalence rates, outcomes, risk factors, and other relevant epidemiological measures.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
