Prominent B.C. health researcher backs Vancouver’s regulation of marijuana dispensaries

One of B.C.’s most renowned health researchers is backing Vancouver’s move to regulate marijuana dispensaries.

Dr. Julio Montaner is recognized globally for his work combating HIV/AIDS – something he says came with no help from the Conservative government’s policies.

“They are unable to have a mature, adult conversation about difficult issues, so it’s time for them to go.”

Montaner has watched federal Health Minister Rona Ambrose trash Vancouver’s new pot regulations.

He says it’s the same tactic the Tories have taken with the safe-injection site, Insite, and prescription opioids – policy Montaner has promoted as part of his work.

He says the new regulations are not only the right move, he thinks they should go further.

The BC-CfE Laboratory is streamlining reporting processes for certain tests in order to simplify distribution and record-keeping, and to ensure completeness of results. Beginning September 2, 2025, results for the ‘Resistance Analysis of HIV-1 Protease and Reverse Transcriptase’ (Protease-RT) and ‘HIV-1 Integrase Resistance Genotype’ tests will be combined into a single ‘HIV-1 Resistance Genotype Report’.
