En la octava edición de estos galardones, el infectólogo Julio Montaner fue galardonado con el premio Perfil a la Inteligencia de los argentinos, categorÃa Ciencia y TecnologÃa.
Su trabajo fue clave para descubrir que un cóctel de tres drogas podÃa controlar la progresión del VIH. Además, fue quien propuso que el tratamiento tambin podÃa servir para prevenir la transmisión de personas infectadas a no infectadas.
El especialista residente en Canadá no pudo estar presente en la ceremonia que tiene lugar en el Centro Cultural Nstor Kirchner por lo que grabó un video en el que agradeció el premio: “Para mà es siempre muy grato tener el reconocimiento de no solo mi patria sino de aquellos que están en el liderazgo de la opinión pública”.
Con respecto a la labor por la que fue reconocido, explicó: “Yo hace 35 años que estoy en Canadá y he dedicado mi vida profesional a tratar de controlar el VIH y sida y me da gran placer decir que hoy gracias a los esfuerzos de nuestro equipo y equipos alrededor del mundo tenemos un plan, lo que se llama la estrategia del 90 90 90, que nos va a permitir terminar con la epidemia de sida en los próximos 15 a 20 años“.
Tras lo cual expuso que de cara al 2030 se espera que la cantidad de personas que padecen y mueren a causa de esta afección se reduzca en un 90 por ciento. “De ser asà tendrÃamos virtualmente el final de la pandemia global, no erradicarÃamos el sida pero sà podrÃamos controlar la pandemia que ha sido, quizás dirÃa yo, la peor noticia que hemos tenido en los últimos 40 años”, manifestó.
“Aprovecho esta oportunidad para agradecerles el premio pero tambin comprometerlos a que juntos vamos a ser los jueces de si es verdad que nuestros polÃticos hacen lo que dicen, porque decirlo es fácil, hacerlo no tanto. Y es el público y la prensa en forma importante los que deben tener esta actitud vigilante sobre nuestros polÃticos para que hagan lo que prometen”, expresó.
