Fauci Speaks About Ending HIV at Glasgow Meeting Kickoff

GLASGOW, Scotland – Patients and clinicians in high-income settings in Western Europe, a population that is not often in the limelight at HIV meetings, will be one of the topics of discussion here at the upcoming HIV Drug Therapy 2016.

“Once people get into care in Western Europe, they do extremely well, with very high levels of viral suppression,” said Andrew Phillips, PhD, professor of epidemiology at University College London in the United Kingdom, who is chair of the conference.

Julio Montaner, MD, director of BC Centre for Excellence in HIV and AIDS in Vancouver, will track the progress of the treatment-as-prevention strategy in the 10 years since he and his colleagues published the landmark essay that gave birth to the movement (Lancet. 2006;368:531-536).

Although the idea of treatment as prevention was initially controversial and viewed with skepticism, clinical trials have since shown that immediate treatment is the best strategy for infected individuals and is highly effective in preventing transmission.

The BC-CfE Laboratory is streamlining reporting processes for certain tests in order to simplify distribution and record-keeping, and to ensure completeness of results. Beginning September 2, 2025, results for the ‘Resistance Analysis of HIV-1 Protease and Reverse Transcriptase’ (Protease-RT) and ‘HIV-1 Integrase Resistance Genotype’ tests will be combined into a single ‘HIV-1 Resistance Genotype Report’.
