(Vancouver) – Congratulations to BC-CfE director Dr. Julio Montaner who will assume the prestigious position of President of the International AIDS Society (IAS) at the conclusion of the XVII International AIDS Conference in Mexico City, on August 8th, 2008.
Dr. Montaner has been in the role of President-Elect for the past two years. His role as President will be a two-year term and following that, he will have the position of Past President for two years.
This is a significant accomplishment and will position BC & Canada at the table of the largest HIV organization in the world with more the 10,000 members from 185 different countries.
Dr. Julio S.G Montaner is Professor of Medicine, Chair of AIDS Research and Head of the Division of AIDS at the University of British Columbia. He is also the Director of the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS (BC-CfE), a member of various scientific committees on HIV therapy, and a founding Co-Director of the Canadian HIV Trials Network.
Supported by a background in Internal Medicine, Dr. Montaner is a national and international leader in HIV/AIDS clinical work and research. Dr. Montaner has published over 300 peer reviewed manuscripts in journals of high impact. The five most significant areas he has contributed to include: 1) prophylaxis and treatment of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia; 2) adherence to HAART; 3) treatment failure; 4) treatment simplification; and 5) emerging antiretroviral toxicities.
Dr. Montaner has been a pioneer in the field of HIV/AIDS and will continue to be a world leader in the expansion of HAART.
