A wrap-up from the International AIDS Conference in Vienna

Today marks the end of the International AIDS Conference in Vienna, where more than 20,000 delegates representing scientists, global health leaders and advocates convened to discuss the latest developments in the epidemic that now afflicts 33.4 million people worldwide.

The Health Blog was among the crowd and spoke with Julio Montaner, outgoing president of the International AIDS Society, which sponsored the meeting, about some of the themes that emerged. Here’s a quick rundown:

Treat to Prevent: Growing evidence shows that effectively treating people infected with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, helps curb the epidemic. Using anti-retroviral drugs to reduce HIV to undetectable levels in the body lowers the risk of transmission by 90% or more, says Montaner, a prominent AIDS researcher from British Columbia. The latest evidence is this paper by Montaner and colleagues, published in the Lancet.

“Every time we expand use of anti-retroviral therapy, new transmission goes down,” he tells us.
