Julio Montaner: "Today we can say that the end of the AIDS epidemic has already begun"

Although we sometimes forget, AIDS figures are still staggering. Every minute, a young woman is infected with HIV. And each year, 2.6 million people (of which 370,000 are under 15 years) become infected. But, while there is still no way to cure it permanently, for the Argentine doctor and Canadian resident Julio Montaner there are reasons to be optimistic: we now know how to control the transmission of HIV.

"If we extend testing and treatment to all people living with the virus, transmission is reduced, and the epidemic can be slowed dramatically," says Montaner, who came to Argentina to participate in the Congress of the Argentina Society of Infectious Diseases. "The best weapon to prevent HIV transmission is the treatment of those who are infected."

Julio Montaner: "Hoy podemos decir que el fin de la epidemia de sida ya comenzó"

Aunque a veces se las olvide, las cifras del sida son todavía abrumadoras. Cada minuto, una mujer joven se infecta con el VIH. Y cada año, son 2,6 millones de personas (de las cuales 370.000 tienen menos de 15 años) las que contraen la infección. Pero, a pesar de que aún no hay forma de curarlo definitivamente, para el médico argentino residente en Canadá Julio Montaner hay razones para ser optimistas: hoy se sabe cómo controlar la transmisión del VIH.

"Si se amplía el testeo y se trata a todas las personas que viven con el virus, se reduce la transmisión, y la epidemia puede frenarse drásticamente -dice Montaner, que vino a la Argentina para participar del Congreso de la Sociedad Argentina de Infectología-. La mejor arma para prevenir la transmisión del VIH es el tratamiento de los que están infectados."
