ORGANIZATION: The BC-CfE is a world-renowned HIV/AIDS Centre with an innovative, low-barrier approach to healthcare delivery in clinical practice and an integrated group of research concentrations in Laboratory Sciences, Clinical Trials, Population Health and Epidemiology, Health Economics and Professional Education Programs. A multidisciplinary team of clinicians including Physicians, Nurses, Social Workers and Peers and researchers including Health Economists, Epidemiologists, Clinical Researchers, Statisticians, Programmers, and Data Analysts work collaboratively to improve the health of British Columbians with HIV and communities facing socio-economic barriers in accessing healthcare.
ROLE SUMMARY: Reporting to the Senior Director, the Manager, supporting the mandate of the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS, oversees and coordinates the work of the BC-CfE Communications team, leading the development, implementation and evaluation of communication strategies that effectively convey our initiatives, achievements and study findings. This includes the of promotion of the services provided, studies undertaken and educational opportunities offered by the BC-CfE to a diverse audience including clients, healthcare professionals, BC-CfE staff, partners, government and the public.
The Manager plans and coordinates communications-related projects, special events, proactive media publicity, advertising and external speakers; evaluates media coverage and produces various internal/external communications materials; ensures overall quality, consistency and effectiveness of complex and/or confidential communication materials.
ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead the BC-CfE Communications Team:

- Working with the Senior Director to set priorities and strategic direction, provide direction to, mentor, support and develop the members of the Communications team to deliver their best work.
- Monitor and asses team structure and roles to ensure the team is staffed appropriately and support succession planning.
- Develop Communication Strategies:
-
- Create and execute comprehensive communication plans to support the BC-CfE’s initiatives, programs, and services.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders to identify key messages and target audiences.
- Content Creation and Management:
-
- Write, edit, and oversee the production of press releases, newsletters, social media posts, and other communication materials.
- Ensure all content is accurate, timely, and aligns with the BC-CfE’s goals and values.
- Media Relations:
-
- Build and maintain relationships with local, provincial, national, and international media.
- Act as the primary contact for media inquiries and coordinate interviews with staff and experts.
- Monitor and assess impact of media coverage and measure the effectiveness of media outreach.
- Health Organization Relations:

- Build and maintain relationships with the communications leads at Providence Health Care (PHC), Providence Research (PR) as well as other health organization partners.
- Attends regular editorial meetings on behalf of the BC-CfE at PHC and PR to remain current in the activities of these teams and share strategic communication plans for dissemination through these channels
- Internal Communications:

- Foster effective communication within the Centre by developing internal newsletters, memos, and updates.
- Support the leadership team in communicating key messages and updates to staff.
- Engage with the BC-CfE teams to foster awareness of the BC-CfE Communications team and the support offered by it.
- Event Management:

- Plan and coordinate events, such as press conferences, awareness campaigns, and community outreach programs.
- Develop promotional materials and ensure consistent messaging across all event communications.
- Stakeholder Engagement:

- Engage with clients, healthcare professionals, donors, and community partners to promote the BC-CfE’s initiatives and programs.
- Gather and incorporate feedback to improve communication efforts.
- Crisis Communications:
-
- Develop and implement crisis communication plans to manage potential risks and protect the Centre’s reputation.
- Act quickly and effectively in response to any communications-related crises.
ROLE QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Training and Experience
- University degree (Masters degree preferred) in Communications, Journalism or Public Relations or related discipline, supplemented by five (5) to seven (7) years of recent related experience in a research or health care environment, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Leadership experience of a communications team supplemented with leadership competency training (e.g., Clear Leadership/Leadership Linx/Transformational Leadership) an asset.
Skills and Abilities
- Demonstrated excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills, with exemplary attention to detail.
- The ability to translate complex medical or technical information into clear and engaging content
- Proven record in planning and creating compelling content and campaigns.
- Experience in media relations and social media management with a passion for social justice, innovation and quality improvement
- Skill in developing compelling and effective presentations and communications materials using professional content development software.
- Ability to contribute to the implementation and evaluation of strategic communication plans.
- Demonstrated project management skills and ability to handle multiple tasks, work well under pressure and to meet tight deadlines.
- Skill and proficiency in digital communication tools, platforms and content management systems.
- Ability to handle highly confidential and sensitive issues with skill, tact and diplomacy.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the Ability to work effectively and establish good working relationships with internal and external groups and partners.
- Ability to lead a high-performance team and with a high degree of ethical and professional behaviour.
