Epidemiology and Population Health

STATUS: This is a part-time (minimum 15 hours per week) or full-time (37.5 hours per week) position, depending on the availability of a suitable candidate or candidates. The position is for a one-year contract with the possibility of extension.

JOB START DATE: ASAP

SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.

LOCATION: BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS (BC-CfE), St. Paul’s Hospital, Vancouver, BC

ORGANIZATION: The BC-CfE currently employs a team of statisticians, programmers, data managers, research nurses and data entry clerks who work collaboratively on cohort-based epidemiological and clinical studies. The BC-CfE is a world renown HIV/AIDS research centre including Research Laboratory, Clinical Trials, Drug Treatment Program, Epidemiology and Professional Education Programs.

JOB: As an integral member of the research team, the peer research associate assists in the implementation of research studies and related activities. They will support the ongoing relationships and connection with community organizations and members. They may support knowledge translation and dissemination activities as part of the study protocol(s).

DUTIES:

  • Working collaboratively with academic researchers, clinicians, and other peer research associates, to fulfill the goals and objectives of the Hope to Health WelTel Study.
  • This position will involve many research protocol tasks, including, but not limited to: recruiting participants, obtaining consent, completing questionnaires with study participants, administering honoraria to participants, maintaining records and completing other administrative work.
  • Supporting community engagement as a part of the research process
  • Assisting and providing direction for research projects related to mental health, substance use, hepatitis C, HIV, and other related conditions
  • Liaising with community organizations and community members as a means of fostering engagement with the research study team
  • Maintains strict confidentiality related to identification and release of study data.
  • Performs other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge of and experience working with communities in the downtown eastside of Vancouver
  • Knowledge of and experience working with individuals experiencing homelessness and/or living with mental health and substance use disorders
  • An understanding of harm reduction principles and practices
  • An understanding of experiences of and common barriers to care facing people who use drugs
  • An ability to act as a peer to research participants who are experiencing chronic health challenges and live in the downtown east side of Vancouver
  • Preference to individuals with a history of involvement in research
  • Enthusiasm to learn and be part of a dynamic team
  • Reliable and organized
  • Basic computer competency and familiarity with e-mail and Internet
